Security savvy home and business owners have been using video surveillance cameras for decades for prevention of crime and identification of perpetrators. Though the security camera industry tends to lag in terms of having the latest resolution hardware, high definition cameras are becoming more readily available and affordable. 1080p systems are quite prevalent but now that 4k compatible screens are starting to dominate the market it is time to look to the future and see what 4k security camera systems bring to the table.
Without a doubt the ultra high definition 4k security cameras are more expensive than those that are 1080p, but for many the price differential is worth the added video benefits. At 4x the picture quality these images provide much greater detail (beyond a simple image sensor) and the ability to take advantage of digital zoom. 4k systems will of course require more storage and network bandwidth, but with proper planning and ample wifi these needs are easily met. We have combed through all the specs and reviews of the latest 4k camera offerings and these are the top 5 that you should consider.
USG Sony Chip Ultra 4K 8MP Network Dome Security Camera
The Sony SNC-VM772R is currently accepted as having the highest resolution and best low light performance on the market. At a couple thousand dollars per camera, though, it is not practical for the casual application of a home or small business. Instead, consider this option by Urban Security Group which uses the Sony IMX274 chip in its own housing. USG’s camera uses the latest video compression format and premium internal components to bring their customers high quality security cameras at a fraction of the price of the leading models. The night vision range goes up to 65 feet and is supported by infrared LEDs to boost picture quality. This camera can be used as a standalone device that streams through your network to your computer, phone, or tablet, with apps available for both Apple and Android devices, though it is also compatible with USG NVR devices. The vandal-proof housing and anti-cut bracket will ensure the camera cannot be taken out of commission, so customers can have peace of mind knowing that it is always watching.
Samsung/Hanwha Techwin PNO-9080R 4K Bullet camera
In side-by-side testing with similar products from Sony, Axis, and Hikvision, this camera performed the best all-around. It has superior low light performance and wide dynamic range, making it easily the best multipurpose option on this list. Given the performance and versatility, this certainly offers the “bang for your buck”. It boasts a maximum 12M resolution with a wide dynamic range that results in one of the clearest pictures you’ll find in a 4k camera, regardless of time of day. This camera features Hanwha’s WiseStream technology, which compresses data by 75% to allow for faster streaming. A 128 gb SD card slot allows for local storage, though it is also compatible with NVR devices. The Samsung camera is on the pricier end but if detail and clarity are crucial regardless of time of day it makes a compelling option.
GW Security 4k System
The GW system can be purchased with anywhere from 2 to 32 cameras, making it an affordably scalable package from the get-go. Though it does not boast the clarity of a Sony or Samsung, GW easily outperforms any 1080p camera on the market. This system can easily be set up by downloading the Apple or Android smartphone app, scanning the QR code on the 1 TB NVR device, and following the instructions. Video can be viewed and recorded in widescreen from any computer or mobile device with the app. Since the cameras are powered over Ethernet the amount of cabling necessary is minimized and getting longer cables if necessary is much less expensive than replacing 4k specific power adapters. The 8 Megapixel lens has a 2.8-12mm manual zoom, so this system is best used for static monitoring where auto zoom and tracking are not needed. Though the NVR is 1 terabyte, the record mode can be set to manual, time scheduled, alarm triggered, or motion detect in order to save space and save the user from going through hours of unneeded footage. GW has also gotten very high reviews for their tech support, so even a beginner should be able to get up and running with this system.
Lorex 4k Ultra HD Wired Network Security System
For a full workhorse system, look no further than the Lorex 4k Ultra HD Wired Network Security System. Lorex’s 4k offering is protected by a weatherproof and anti-corrosive metal exterior for use in all seasons, though it is just as effective in indoor applications. This camera does not require a 4k screen for use, but if the video is ever needed for evidence purposes you will be covered by its high resolution. Key to its performance is an 8.51 megapixel Sony Exmor R image sensor which converts the signal from analog to digital. Back illuminated pixel technology is utilized to enhance the low light performance, which is critical for night time application where an infrared camera is too costly. Unlike many 4k cameras, when there is ambient light this model can use Lorex’s Color Night Vision technology to provide full color detail at night instead of automatically shifting to black and white. Digital noise reduction technology is used to further enhance low light performance by filtering out the graininess that plagues lower resolution cameras. This system comes with 6 cameras and a 2TB hard drive for complete coverage of your home or business.
Honorable mention: Nest Cam IQ
Less than $$
This offering by Nest is not a true 4k camera, it is 1080p with a 4k sensor, but we included it in this list due to the features and ease of adoption by someone new to home or small business security. The 4k sensor elevates the 1080p resolution to give the user extra sharp imaging above the average 1080p HD camera. This camera is easy to set up, integrates with Amazon Alexa, and of course is accessible through the Nest app for Android and Apple. Unlike the 4k cameras on this list, the Nest Cam IQ gives the owner the ability to have a conversation through the device and it is smart enough to differentiate between people and objects. The Cam IQ can even tell the difference between familiar and unfamiliar faces to reduce false alarms. Though not necessarily at an introductory level price, the Nest Cam IQ would be an excellent purchase for anyone looking for a smart camera to increase their home security.
Regardless of budget, application, or tech-savviness, there is a camera and system out there for everyone. 4k may be a newer technology and more expensive than 1080p, but it is rapidly growing and will be relevant for much longer than HD systems with lower resolution. Most users consider the price differential to be well worth it considering the added detail and increased likelihood of capturing the images (and perpetrators) they need.
